After finally acquiring a full-frame camera I found that I had overlooked the fact that my only wide-angle zoom was an EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. A great lens but not compatible with a full-frame. So I read and reread reviews, specs, etc., until I decided the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM was for me.

Upon opening the box I was impressed with how solidly built this lens is, albeit heavy—this lens weighs in at just over 2 pounds! Next, the huge glass, 77mm filter diameter, assured me that I was going to be able to allow a lot of light into my camera. And of course there is the red L Series Lens ring which signifies superior build quality associated with Canon’s ‘Luxury’ lenses.

The first thing I wanted to do is explore the low light capabilities of this lens. Here are a few shots of our English Bulldog puppy, “Lucky”.

f/2.8 1/50 sec @ ISO 400

Both photos were taken in very low light, too dark to read in, at a focal length of 67mm. Of course digital noise increases with higher ISO but for this type of shot, not all that objectionable to me.

Now, on to the great outdoors to see what else this lens can do…

None of these photos were retouched—they are as shot right out of the camera. They were resized for the web.

What impresses me the most is the phenomenal life-like colors. These pictures replicate exactly what me eyes saw. And, by the way these were all handheld!

I should mention the reverse extension characteristic of this lens: it’s longest at 24mm and retracts when adjusting to 70mm!

Pros: Outstanding Image Quality, very sharp and very fast. USM Autofocus is quick, quiet, and accurate. Excellent low light performance. Great for weddings and other indoor events such as sports, (school or other).

Cons: Weight—about 33 1/2 ounces. Cost—well over $1000. No image stabilization.

I am very pleased with the performance of this lens. Any concern about the weight of this lens quickly dissipated with each shot I took. The EF 24-70L has taken it’s rightful place as my walk-around lens. I have absolutely no reservations in recommending this lens to any photographer, amateur and professional.
