The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is a good starter lens for folks new to macro photography. While macro lenses get quite a bit more extreme with respect to focal length and magnification, not to mention size and weight (and price!), this 100mm lens with its 1:1 ratio is fairly small, light weight, and economical.

The lens itself doesn’t extend from the housing when focusing on a subject, which makes it handy to get in close to a subject without worrying about bumping it. Auto-focus can sometimes be a bit touchy, with the lens changing the points it focussed on with each half-depression of the shutter button. But that is to be expected when zooming in so closely on a subject, so I just switched to manual focus for the majority of the time.

Auto-focus is pretty quick when accommodating normal focusing distances, though slower when it has to go from 1:1 to infinity. I found focus to be a little bit soft in general, and there was absolutely no way to take a clear hand-held picture, so the tripod was absolutely mandatory. Canon makes a similar lens with Image Stabilization that would come in handy for hand-held outdoor shots.

This lens is handy for non-macro photography as well, given its 1:1 ratio, and comes highly recommended as a useful lens for portrait photography. It is more affordable than its counterparts, which provides more value and flexibility for the dollars you will have to part with.

For much more information on this lens, I highly recommend that you read The Digital Picture’s in-depth analyses and reviews of the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens.

The most excellent folks at Pro Photo Rental provided the lens for the purpose of this review. Their service has always been outstanding and I continue to highly recommend them to anyone with lens rental needs.(*)
