Unboxing – One of Life’s Great Joys

Written by:

Let me ask you, as one photographer to another… are there many things better in life than unboxing a brand new camera? Not many, I think!

A serendipitous sequence of events lead to the ability to buy my Canon EOS 7D with 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM kit lens – which I have greatly coveted since its debut last year – several months ahead of schedule. I pulled the trigger on it on Monday evening, and it was in my hands on Wednesday. Oh joy, oh happiness, oh how lovely it is to live in the age of Amazon and UPS.

Of course, I took photos of each stage of the unboxing. For you, my gentle readers! (Click on each for a larger version.)

What I am looking forward to the most:
- Eight frames per second
- ISO up to 6400
- 19 point auto-focus
- On-the-fly switching between RAW and JPEG
- 63 zone dual-layer light metering
- HD video

What I am looking forward to the least:
- Reading the 250 page manual.

Rest assured, once I gain familiarity with this new camera, you’ll all be getting a detailed review. Plus, I received a couple of other toys in this shipment that I’m eager to share with you all, in upcoming entries!

Here you have depicted one the most finest moments of a photographer’s life….unboxing the new camera, which one was dreaming for several days…..the feeling is really awesome man!!

Tiffany, congratulations!!! That is awesome!! I am very envious, as I had to settle for purchasing a used 20D, actually dropping from my 10.1MP Rebel XTi (actually Kiss Digital X) to 8.2MP camera, though I am very happy with the feel of my “new” body and its ability to render pretty decent images at 1600 and 3200 (“H”) ISOs.nnEnjoy not only the unboxing, but also the shooting!nnBill

Congrats! Enjoy your new camera. :-)

Agreed and I love my 7D – I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. One thing that puzzles me is that Canon Canada has always offered the 7D with the phenomenal 15-85mm IS lens but Canon USA does not (or doesn’t seem to). I would miss the wide angle. Question is now, what’s your next lens purchase or have you got a bunch already? Which is your favourite?

  • Tiffany

Hi Phillippe, excellent question and, I think, a great topic for an upcoming entry! My favorite at the moment is my 17-55 f/2.8 IS. I have plans over the next year or so to buy a telephoto (70-300), a wide angle (16-35) and a macro (100mm). Then I think I’ll be set for a while!
